Welcoming Mobile Technology

In this hi-tech world when technology is advancing so rapidly both Parents and Teachers are worried about their children and students for the unlimited and unfiltered access to the internet. In this era when more and more schools are banning these personal hi-tech devices like iPad, smart phones, iPods etc. on campus, one of the schools in Ohio State is already seeing positive results from its different approach. Port Clinton High School in Ohio welcomes students to bring their devices on campus to take advantage of the school’s new Wi-Fi service. The credit goes to the school Principal who took the initiative and with the help and inputs from instructors, students, parents and his IT team they came up with a new policy which has open-access agreement, with some limitations. The number of technology related violations decreased with implementation of this policy. Rather than banning I think there are better ways to implement technology which is not only useful for our classrooms but also provide opportunities and create a sense of responsibility among students.

Journal of Research on Computing in Education

The author of this article tries to explore the relationship and to determine if there was any significant effect on learning style when high school students were working in a technology-rich environment. The study took place in 1996-1997 school years to compare two different types of learning environments in which high school freshman classes from two different high schools were assessed. One class is from more traditional high school that is known for its excellence in education but was not tech savvy has a more traditional curriculum, and the other one was from a high school that infuses technology into every subject. Both the classes were pre and post tested on a learning style in different environments. The results of this study found that the use of technology affected all aspects of the teaching and learning and demanded new approaches to the curriculum. New ways of exploring the curriculum emerged as teachers tried to integrate technology directly into the subject matter.

Integrating Technology into the Classroom

As technology is getting deeper and deeper into our lives these days, this article ‘Integrating Technology into the Classroom’ by Melissa Kelly emphasizes that how important it is to introduce the latest technology in our classrooms in 21st century. More and more schools and educational institutions are making changes in order to place internet services in every classroom. With the availability of internet in classrooms endless possibilities of research is available at the click of button for students as well as teachers. Libraries may or may not have all the books or articles available at the given time but with the use of internet you can have lots of information right away. Publishing websites and posting information about your class is also interesting and helpful for both students and teachers. Online assessment is also a great tool to interact with students enrolled in distant learning as well as if you are away from school or other educational institution you can still access the information if you have an internet available.
